Well yesterday was certainly an interesting day for me. Some good, some bad. But amidst all the craziness of the day, the most crazy of all crazy things happened to me. I wanted to run. I actually had the thought pop into my head “I should go for a run.” And then, about five seconds later, I thought “Who are you and what have you done with my normal brain?” Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I ran, much less did so voluntarily.
I tried dismissing the notion, but something kept bringing it back to the forefront of my thoughts. And that’s when I mentioned it to my dear friend, Shannon. Her response? “Come running with me and Dorothy today!” To which I quickly said no, and attempted a myriad of excuses. Luckily for me, Shannon just ignored it all and asked me again to join her. I said yes, she said “great, see you at 4:30 by Marty.” This left me feeling quite certain that I was going bonkers.
So at 4:25pm, dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, I walked outside and joined Shannon and Dorothy. We walked down to the corner, then walked to the next street, and began the craziness that is jogging. The first ten, fifteen steps seemed incredibly awkward. In fact, they felt downright alien. But I had Dorothy leading me and Shannon encouraging me from behind. We got across one block, then another, then a bit further… When I said I had to stop, Shannon chimed in with more encouragement and said “just make it to that tree” and then “to that sign” “to that guy cutting lawn” “to the street sign.”
Before I knew it, we were to the firehouse (our halfway marker) and I was feeling really proud of myself. Me, a 300+lb individual, running. Who’d a thunk it, eh? The run/walk back wasn’t nearly as productive, but I still managed another three spurts of jogging and crossed that finish line with my head held high, my calves burning, my lungs enflamed, and a hunger to repeat the exercise again. I’m not sure how well I’ll do with it, but I’m going to try my darnedest.
I asked on facebook for advice and received a great outpouring of support and advice. I’ll be trying the Couch-to-5k program and am excited to start on Tuesday. I woke up today feeling a bit sore, but other than that still functioning. I told some friends last night (still surging from the endorphin high) that I’d like to be able to run the whole distance from the school to the firehouse and back without stopping by January. Looking at the Couch to 5k, I’m thinking that should be possible by then and look forward to the day I can say I’ve accomplished the goal and set a new one. Right now it’s baby steps, but I’m hoping this is the beginning of a new chapter.
